Recently when I was developing a web site, I got a comment from one in the design team, who didn’t think we had followed their specifications close enough.

“Why is the first heading on the first page “Start Page” ? Why isn’t it “Welcome to XXXX!” as we said in the specification?”

Well, this is actually a really good question, and it got me thinking. As a user, if there isn’t a clear bread crumb, highlight or anything else that indicates where on the site I am, I will get confused.

The web is not print!

A really good example of bad usability is this blog. It’s difficult to gasp who writes it, what it is about and how you navigate it, if you haven’t used a similar blog before.

All Star Superman

All Star Superman is written by Grant Morrison, drawn by Frank Quitely and inked by Jamie Grant.

This is a new run on the Superman character. Grant Morrison has earlier written ‘The Invisibles’ ‘The Filth’ and ‘New X-Men’.

The art is brilliant, very nice to look at. Superman especially look very cool, and I like how he appears to be all clumbsy as Clark Kent.

The stories is very well variated and each issue contains a good story, that aligns well with the over all plot.
But let me tell you this: I want to read more!
I specially like the part where Lex Luthor is being interviewed by Clark Kent.
Quote:

“How can you compete with something like that? I mean, feel these, Clarke. THIS is the result of hard work!”

Lex is letting Clark feel his biceps.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A modern classic.

What apps do you use?

These are the ones that I use most frequently:

  • VideoLAN – Best video viewer ever! Can handle any codec you throw at it (almost)!
  • Rhythmbox – Gnomes standard music player. Very good and solid.
  • Geany – Light weight editor without the hassle.
  • Filezilla – Easy and solid FTP client.
  • Pidgin – Instant messaging for everyone!
  • Firefox – Web browser
  • Epiphany – Gnomes lighter web browser
  • Thunderbird – Email client and address book
  • Sunbird – Calender ( It handles iCal!)
  • uTorrent – BitTorrent client (very light footprint)
  • OpenOffice – Office apps
  • Tracker – Search app (Extremely useful)
  • Gizmo – Software SIP-phone. Much cooler than Skype!

Do I have to mention that I use Gnome?

Which do you prefer?
