{"id":1240,"date":"2012-03-19T22:30:11","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T21:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.robinjakobsson.se\/blog\/?p=1240"},"modified":"2012-03-19T22:30:11","modified_gmt":"2012-03-19T21:30:11","slug":"serving-friends-with-web-servicesfriends-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robinjakobsson.se\/blog\/2012\/03\/19\/serving-friends-with-web-servicesfriends-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Serving web services to friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.excito.com\/node\/8\">Excitio B3<\/a> (personal server) that I use for different computer tasks.<br \/>\nIt serves my <a title=\"Your private space in the cloud\" href=\"http:\/\/owncloud.org\">ownCloud<\/a>, an instance of <a title=\"Music streamer\" href=\"http:\/\/ampache.org\/\">Ampache<\/a>, a <a title=\"Tor Project\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torproject.org\/\">Tor<\/a> bridge, a video\/music\/photos streamer, a anonymous dropbox (FTP) and <a title=\"ThinkUp\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkupapp.com\/\">thinkUp<\/a> &#8211; a web app that backs up your social media interactions. I also use it as my router, and as a backup for my photo masters. So far, it&#8217;s been a very pleasant experience. I am looking to use it even more! I would like to be able to serve my friends with small and useful web apps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With great power, comes great responsibility<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause of this, I won&#8217;t try to help with their e-mail, or any other service that requires uptime. After all, the server is run from my living room \ud83d\ude42 and I&#8217;m always trying out new stuff on it. So the services need to be quick and dirty, the jack and use kind of apps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why I&#8217;m doing this<\/strong><br \/>\nI have this vision\/ideal of direct communication \u00e2\u20ac\u201c without middle hands.<br \/>\nThat means no government, no corporations in between.<br \/>\nAnd after all: I have both the CPU and bandwidth to do this.<br \/>\nBesides the B3, I also have an account with WebFaction that supports both node.js and a few other cool technologies.
